In January I shared with you the start of my crochet journey in the following blog post, I thought it was about time I gave you an update.

I have finished the lap blanket I had started; I’m so pleased with it it has a border and it’s Keeva approved! It is also slightly wonky…… but I love it. Each week we had a certain number of rows to complete, I managed to keep up. I would really recommend doing a CAL ( Crochet a Long). It gets you into the swing of crocheting regularly and it gives a great result at the end.

I have also taught myself how to do a magic circle which is a way of starting in the round and made a hat.

Next on my hook is a cushion to go with my blanket, it’s a pattern from Lucy at Attic24 and is fantastic, but it does make your brain ache. You crochet into the front of stitched in one row and the back in the next row. It makes petals and a lovely flower; the reverse is just going to be plain crochet so that should go quicker.

It’s going to be 14″ wide so I’ve got a long way to go! I’m sure you’d like to see the pattern so below is the link.

The things I have learned……

  • Counting is really, really important! You can’t just add extra stitches on the end, it makes your blanket wibbly!
  • The magic circle is amazing and is a great start for circle crochet
  • No chain foundation is also amazing, I don’t enjoy doing chains and it gives a neater edge.
  • Double check you know the stitch you are about to hook…….. if you don’t, you’ll end up doing single crochet instead of double and it will be all wrong! I wonder how I know this…….
  • Not all patterns are correct, sometimes there are mistakes in them, if it looks wrong check it out before you go too far.
  • Not all yarn is equal……. I bought some yarn that I thought was double knit, it was actually 4 ply…….I’m now having to use it double, which of course means I need twice as much yarn.

I hope you have enjoyed my crochet update, do let me know if you have any questions.

I managed to locate some apple rings in Tescos! So, the yummy cookies were made! I’ll be back on Wednesday with some more paper crafting.
