I have an announcement…
You have asked and I am now going to include metric measurements for ALL my projects going forwards.
Now this may make you roll your eyes, or smile, both are acceptable. I need to share a bit of history. Here in the UK in 1964, yes 57 years ago and 4 years before I was born the powers that be decided we would go metric.
As a nation we Brits are a bit resistant to change.
In 2021, we still use miles as our distance measure, clothing has both metric and imperial measurements. Many people refer to milk in pints not litres and 1/2lb of butter not 250g. I was taught metric throughout school, and it stuck for baking and cooking. Once I became a paper crafter I moved back into inches. Basically in those good old days everything came in from the USA, and it was in 12″ x 12″ papers. So that’s what I used, and have continued to use for the past 30+ years (I’ve decide to go with 30+ rather than confess the real number, eeeek, closer to 40).
So that is why almost all of my tutorials are in inches, it’s my comfort zone. Over the years I have made several metric tutorials and some fun fold cards, have to be made in cms because it goes to 1/16th of an inch and that is tricky for many people to see on a trimmer. I also like simple units. I don’t like 0.7cm, I mean 7 is a nice number, but really, having to count those teeny tiny lines is tricky. So when I make a project in cm, for me its not as simple as converting it, multiplying by 2.54. Because a 3 1/2″ measurement would then become 8.89cm that is crazy. So I completely remake the project in sensible units like 8.5cm or 9cm. I mean do you really want to try and work out where 8.89cm is? Of course that means designing the projects twice, but you are so worth it!
I will be remaking some of your favourite videos in cms as well, make sure you leave a comment to let me know which ones you would like in cms!
So there you have it, a quick UK history and a promise that which ever unit you prefer, moving forwards you will get both. I would love to know what you think. Do please leave a comment below.
I do have a pretty card for you today using the Beautifully penned papers which are currently FREE with a £45 or €60 order. The papers are black and white, you get 4 sheets of each of 3 designs in a 12″ x 12″ (30.5cm x 30.5cm) size. I have just added a little bit of colour to the centre of the flowers I fussy cut. Quick and simple.
Here are all the product links for the Beautifully Penned Best Wishes Card. Click on the pictures to go shopping in my online store.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend, I’ll be back soon.

Brought up on ft and ins, still use to this day (very old!) as well as lbs and oz, and of course stones when weighing myself. When abroad convert all the distances to miles otherwise I can’t tell how far it is, Sad ☹️ person. Having said all that I am happy to work in cm and kilos so if you drop the inches I may struggle a little but all the previous projects are in inches so will carry on with them and probably with time we shall be able to work happily with both.
Apologies for the long comment. Have a brilliant time off with Brian.
Thanks Janet, I’m going to work in both because that seems to make the most sense. I’m pleased I;m not the only one doing lots of converting!
I’ve always worked with a mixture of both, so can’t really say which I prefer, but having been taught in feet and inched I suppose that’s my natural go to! But now getting used to doing more in metric. Wonder now as we’re out of the EU will we go back to imperial? That could be good as we’d then be universal for card making. xx
Its really interesting the mixture of measurements we use. I think since engineering and so on is all metric its unlikely we will go back.
I work in both and usually it’s metric. It’s inches for curtains though.
If I have a preference for card making it is probably metric but inches are fine.
I find it so interesting how we all have certain preferences for certain things! I’ll continue with both so hopefully that will help.
