January always feels like the longest month of the year, doesn’t it? Dark days, so much rain, and that urge to hibernate with cups of tea, cake, and a cosy fire. It’s exactly why I think January is the worst time for New Year’s resolutions. Honestly, who wants to make big life changes in the middle of winter? I’m firmly voting for May resolutions instead, when the days are brighter and motivation feels a little more natural. How about you, are you a bounce into the New Year with resolutions? or hibernate and craft?

With that in mind, this week’s Craft & Chat was all about slowing down and letting white space do the hard work.

The cards I made were inspired by a customer request for clean and simple handmade card ideas with a focus on white on white designs. White-on-white can feel intimidating at first as we have the tendency to fill all the available space on a card. However, a mostly white card gives your design room to breathe, lets texture shine, and makes even the smallest pop of colour stand out. Texture makes all the difference in white-on-white designs. For these cards, I used embossing folders, die-cut frames, and dimensionals to add depth without clutter. Even simple embossing can completely transform a plain white card base.

I worked with products from the Lovely Arrangements Bundle and the Lovely Blossoms Suite by Stampin’ Up! which I’ll also be using for my Craft Together Online class later this month. This suite is perfect for elegant designs, with open line-art floral stamps, coordinating dies including backgrounds, soft patterned papers, and a beautiful colour palette: Petal Pink, Secret Sea, Old Olive, Cloud Cover, and Crumb Cake.

For the first card, I stamped the open flower image in Memento Black Ink so I could colour it with Stampin’ Blends. I only coloured the flower and stamped the leaves, leaving everything else white. That single coloured element became the focal point without overpowering the design. When colouring with Stampin’ Blends, I start with the darkest colour, adding it where shadows would naturally fall, then blend outwards with the lighter colour. Working in one direction gives a smoother finish.

When you are adding embellishments such as gems and leaves odd numbers look more pleasing, visual triangles guide the eye and usually leads to the best result.

For the second card, I introduced colour differently by adding a small strip of patterned paper instead of colouring the flower. Scraps are perfect for this; little banners or accents let you enjoy pattern without losing that clean, fresh look. The flower remained white, supported by die-cut leaves and a bold sentiment, keeping the card largely white while letting the details stand out. I used the Product of the month Stamp set Fabulous Sayings. The Happy Birthday stamp is huge and perfect for this card.

These cards are a great reminder that you don’t need lots of colour to make an impact. White space creates elegance and calm, and thoughtful placement, texture, and dimension do the work for you. I hope this has encouraged you to give White on White cards a try. I would love to see what you make.

I’ll be back soon with some more creative inspiration.
